The new Volvo coaches and buses for IAMSA will be manufactured in Mexico City
One of the world’s largest manufacturers of coaches and buses has just secured an order to supply over 300 new vehicles to a company in Mexico.
323 coaches have been ordered in total by IAMSA. The corporation currently operates the biggest fleet of buses and coaches in the country, with their total number of vehicles in service standing at 10,000. Out of this number a high percentage, some 2,400 of the vehicles are made by Volvo.
Due to the poor rail network in Mexico, bus and coach travel is by far the most effective and popular means by which to travel, especially for those embarking upon long distance journeys.
For Volvo, Mexico is by far one of its biggest markets across the world. The current order of 323 will all be manufactured at Volvo’s base in Mexico City.
As part of the new order from IAMSA, half of the coaches will be fitted with a 12-litre engine. The remaining 50% will have a new 13-litre engine installed which is more fuel efficient, and more environmentally friendly. IAMSA was involved in the testing process of the new 13-lire engine which has just been introduced by Volvo.
The 13-litre engine complies with level Euro 5, which is the current European requirement of environmental efficiency for coaches in the EU. However in Mexico, the standard is Euro 4.
The majority of the Volvo coaches are expected to be delivered by the end of 2010.
